Educational Partnerships

2+2 Transition Science Program with Benedictine University
For Springfield College students who plan to major in the sciences, a 2+2 Transition Program has been established with the Science Department at Benedictine University on the Lisle, Illinois campus. Benedictine University is nationally-renowned for the number of its graduates who go on to earn a PH.D in science or who are accepted into medical school. Since 1993, more than 75 percent of students who majored in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology have pursued a medical degree or a doctorate. The science degrees awarded by Benedictine University include: Biochemistry/Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Clinical Laboratory Science, Health Science, and Nutrition (Dietetics)
w/ optional Biology Minor. (For degree content go to Bachelor Degrees, Benedictine University Science Degree programs).

How the Program Works:

  • Students spend their first two years taking classes at Springfield College acquiring a broad knowledge base in the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.
  • Students spend their last two years taking classes at Benedictine University, Lisle, Illinois, where they will take most of their major courses.
  • SCI graduates are automatically accepted into the program and pay the SCI tuition rate.

Science at Benedictine University:

  • The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has awarded science education and research grants to the department three different times;
  • Courses are offered in the Birck Hall of Science which houses state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory facilities;
  • Courses are taught by Ph.D. faculty who are experts in their area;
  • Full-time faculty teach their own courses and laboratories and hold study sessions with their students; and
  • Full-time faculty members are your academic advisors, counsel you in career choices and mentor your growth during the years you are in the department.

2+2 Partnerships with Area Community Colleges

Faculty at both Springfield College - Benedictine University and partner two-year colleges have carefully planned multiple “2+2” programs of course work so that students may earn both degrees in four years without loss of credit. Our 2+2 bachelor completion programs are with Lincoln Land Community College, Parkland College, Richland Community College, Spoon River Community College and Lincoln College.

Five College Consortium for the Study of Foreign Languages and International Affairs

Five colleges in Central Illinois (Springfield College in Illinois, Illinois College, Lincoln Land Community College, MacMurray College and University of Illinois at Springfield) have formed a consortium to expand opportunities for study in foreign language and international affairs. Springfield College has established agreements with the other consortium institutions for the study of foreign languages not offered at Springfield College. Students with a special interest in foreign languages may contact the Dean of Academic Affairs for more information.

Institute for Lay Ministry Formation - Diocese of Springfield in Illinois

The Institute for Lay Ministry Formation is a two-year adult enrichment program developed to prepare lay people for leadership in parishes and other Church institutions. Candidates in the Lay Ministry Formation Program can also earn an Associate in Arts degree from Springfield College by successfully completing the College’s general education requirements. Pre-Nursing 2+2 Agreements

Springfield College in Illinois has agreements with MacMurray College, Mennonite School of Nursing (ISU) and Millikin University for pre-nursing students. Students who follow the pre-nursing area of study at Springfield College will meet the requirements for the above mentioned transferring institutions.

St. John’s College

The cooperative relationship between Springfield College and St. John’s College in Springfield, Illinois, is designed for students seeking a baccalaureate degree in nursing (B.S.N.) and certification. Students complete their lower division requirements in the first two years at Springfield College earning an Associate in Arts degree. Most upper division work such as the nursing education courses and clinical training is taken in the last two years at St. John’s College, which is fully accredited by all appropriate state, regional and professional agencies. Academic advisors will assist students to coordinate programs that will satisfy the lower division requirements and upper division electives as well as prepare them for professional studies at St. John’s College.
