AA Areas of Concentration

Mathematics Concentration
Today, mathematicians are engaged in activities ranging from the creation of new theories to the translation of scientific and managerial problems into mathematical terms. Successful completion of the mathematics area of study will give the student the necessary background, experience and competence in mathematics, related fields and general education areas to pursue a bachelor’s degree in pure mathematics, computer mathematics, statistics, systems analysis/operations research or mathematics education.

Prerequisites: High School studies should include:

  • 4 years of math including second-year algebra, geometry and trigonometry;

Missing courses may be made up, but because of the sequential nature of the required courses in mathematics, students may have to take more than the usual number of semesters to complete the program.

Requirements: All students must complete the General Education core degree requirements, and they must complete the following courses specific to the concentration. Courses required for the concentration may also satisfy General Education requirements.

  • MAT 223, MAT 224, MAT 225 – Calculus/Analytic Geometry I, II, III;
  • MAT 240 – Linear Algebra;
  • MAT 243 – Differential Equations.

Pre-Business Concentration
The pre-business concentration is designed to meet the needs of students interested in accounting, economics, finance, marketing, management and business administration. Students should make choices that meet the requirements of the program of study that they plan to pursue in the Benedictine Business degree program or at other senior colleges.

Prerequisites: High School studies should include:

  • 2-3 years of math, including algebra and geometry;
  • 2 years of social studies; and
  • 2 years of science

Requirements: All students must complete the General Education core degree requirements, and they must complete the following courses specific to the concentration. Courses required for the concentration may also satisfy General Education requirements.

  • ACC 111, ACC 112 – Principles of Accounting;
  • BUS 105 – Business Computer Systems;
  • ECO 211, ECO 212 – Principles of Economics I and II;
  • MAT 121 – Finite Mathematics;
  • MAT 122 – Calculus for Social Scientists (MAT 223 may replace MAT 122)

Recommended Related Courses for Benedictine University’s Bachelor of Arts in Business:

  • MAT 125 – Statistics with Applications
  • PSY 210 – General Psychology
  • BUS 211 - Business Law

Pre-Communication Arts Concentration
Communication professionals are expected to have a wide range of interests, and students who plan on careers in communications should develop transferable skills to prepare them for this fast-moving, innovative industry. Journalists must be prepared to write about political, economic, social and cultural events as they occur in an increasingly interdependent and diverse world. Students need the background and research skills to learn quickly and accurately about virtually any field of human endeavor that comes into the public eye. Public relations and advertising professionals must understand their institutions and culture, and the role of the mass media in society. All professionals in the communication arts share common skills and values, including an ability to handle the written word with grace and precision, and an appreciation of the ethical demands of their profession.

Requirements: All students must complete the General Education core degree requirements, and they must complete the following courses specific to the concentration. Courses required for the concentration may also satisfy General Education requirements.

  • COM 150 – Introduction to Mass Communication
  • COM 209 – Basic News Writing
  • COM 221 – Introduction to Public Relations
  • COM 222 – Introduction to Advertising
  • COM 296 – Issues in Mass Communication
  • One course in minority or non-Western culture study

Recommended Related Study: A thorough grounding in the liberal arts, including a familiarity with great literature written in the English language, is the most essential foundation. Courses in general ethics, United States and world history, humanities, behavioral sciences and economics are recommended. Students interested in graphic design are encouraged to take courses in the fine arts. Students should make choices that meet the requirements of the program of study that they plan to pursue in the Benedictine Communication Arts degree program or at other senior colleges.

Pre-Computer Science Concentration
Students preparing for a degree in computer science must be able to adapt to an ever-changing field. In the pre-computer science area of study, students will be introduced to a wide range of computer technology and programming.

Prerequisites: High school studies should include:

  • 4 years of math, including second year algebra, geometry and trigonometry.
    Missing courses can be made up, but because of the sequential nature of the required courses, students may have to take more than the usual number of semesters to complete the program.

Requirements: All students must complete the General Education core degree requirements, and they must complete the following courses specific to the concentration. Courses required for the concentration may also satisfy General Education requirements.

  • CSC 130 Introduction to Programming
  • CSC 131 Computer Programming
  • CSC 230 Data Types and Structures I
  • CSC 231 Data Types and Structures II

Recommended Related Study: Students should make choices that meet the requirements of the program of study that they plan to pursue at the senior college level.
