Why Study Psychology with a Criminal Justice Emphasis at Benedictine?
Psychology is for you if you are interested in a career that deals with people on a one-to-one basis or in a group that uses statistics and other research skills.
You will learn what motivates people and the skills needed to work with people effectively. You will develop methodologies and analyze problems posed by the criminal justice system. In addition, you will experience real life situations in the Criminal Justice internship.

What Does a Degree in Psychology at Benedictine Offer?
In our bachelor of arts in psychology program, you will study the behavior of individuals, groups, society and organizations. You will learn both the theories of psychologists and how the theories are applied in real situations.
What Careers are Available with a Psychology Degree?
A wide variety of career options are available with your psychology degree. For example: behavior analyst, case worker, child protection worker, job analyst, public relations, corrections officer, family service worker, social service director, rehabilitation advisor, community relations officer, affirmative action officer and more.
Degree Requirements
- All majors must complete at least 44 major program hours with a grade of “C” or better.
- Complete two Cultural Heritage classes.
- Earn a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 2.00 (on a 4.00 scale).
- 55 semester credit hours must be completed at the baccalaureate level (4-year, regionally accredited schools).

Criminal Justice Emphasis Requirements
An emphasis in criminal justice provides psychology majors a greater understanding of the principles and processes of the criminal justice system. A criminal justice emphasis is not a requirement for psychology majors but is recommended for students wanting to pursue a career in law enforcement or related field. A criminal justice emphasis requires the following course:
- FSC 105 – Introduction to Forensic Science
- CRJ 101 – Introduction to Criminal Justice
- SOCL 306 – Correctional System
- SOCL 321 – Crime and Delinquency
- SOCL 390 – Criminal Justice Field Placement
Minor Requirements
Although minors are not required for graduation, there are many advantages to completing one. A minor area of study consists of courses specified by each department and thus are more in-depth then an emphasis. A minor can potentially make a student more marketable in a competitive job market. Students who wish to declare a minor should work with their advisor.
Minor in Business and Economics
Only courses in which a student has received a “C” or better may be applied to the minor. Students are limited to one minor in the accounting, business and economics, economics, finance, international business and economics, management and organizational behavior, and marketing programs.
Students seeking a minor in business and economics must complete with a grade of “C” or better 21 semester hours which must include: ACCT-111, ACCT-112, ECON-C101, ECON-C102, and at least three 300-level courses in finance, international business and economics, management or marketing.
Students who earn a major in business and economics may not earn a minor in the undergraduate business department.
Minor in Communication Arts
A minor in Communication Arts consists of at least 21 hours in communication art courses with a grade of “C” or better, including: COMM-207, COMM-209 or COMM-254, COMM-317, and an additional three credit-hour communication arts course at the 300-level.
Minor in English Language and Literature
A minor consists of at least 21 hours of courses with a grade of “C” or better, including LITR-100; one course from LITR-255, LITR-256, LITR-257 or LITR-258; and six credit hours at the 300-level.
Minor in Management and Organizational
Behavior
Only courses in which a student has received a “C” or better may be applied to the minor. Students are limited to one minor in the accounting, business and economics, economics, finance, international business and economics, management and organizational behavior, and marketing programs.
Students seeking a minor in management and organizational behavior must complete with a grade of “C” or better 21 semester hours which must include: ECON-101, ECON-102, ACCT-111, MGT-300, and at least three unique 300-level courses in management.
A student who majors in management and organizational behavior may not earn a minor in the undergraduate business department.
Minor in Marketing
Only courses in which a student has received a “C” or better may be applied to the minor. Students are limited to one minor in the accounting, business and economics, economics, finance, international business and economics, management and organizational behavior, and marketing programs. Students seeking a minor in marketing must complete with a grade of “C” or better 21 semester hours, which must include: ECON-C101, ECON-C102, ACCT-111, MKTG-300, and at least three unique 300-level courses in marketing.
A student who majors in marketing may not earn a minor in the undergraduate business department.
Minor in Sociology
A minor in sociology consists of a program of courses totaling at least 21 hours, submitted to and approved by the program director, including at least 12 hours of courses at the 200-level or above, of which at least three hours must be at the 300-level and must be completed with a “C” or better. PSYC-150, PSYC-251 and PSYC-299 may not be included for the minor.
