Reading specialists are in high demand as literacy expectations continue to rise. To participate well in society, people will need powerful literacy abilities that include a wide range of technological competencies. In response to this era of high-stakes literacy, Benedictine University designed the Master of Education (M.Ed.): Reading/Literacy.

Based on the Illinois Content Standards for a Reading Specialist, the degree may lead to a Type 10, K-12 certificate. The reading specialist endorsement is valid not only for teaching reading to students but also for providing technical assistance and/or professional development to other teachers.

Educator’s Scholarship
Benedictine University on the Springfield College in Illinois campus is trying to make earning a master’s degree more affordable by offering teachers the “Educator’s Scholarship.”

The Program

  • Prepares experienced teachers for effective performance.
  • Provides experienced teachers with new tools, new skills and new perspectives to reach more students.
  • Designed for current teachers seeking to enhance their leadership potential and their ability to meet individual needs.
  • Students develop a portfolio which allows them to inquire into
    and track their professional growth and development in
    relation to the Illinois State Standards for the Reading
    Specialist.
  • The M.Ed. degree in Reading and Literacy leads to a Type 10 Reading Specialist certificate.

Admissions Requirements

  • A completed application form and fee.
  • An official transcript demonstrating successful completion of the bachelor’s degree conferred by a regionally accredited institution of higher education and official transcripts from all schools previously attended.
  • A cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0
  • Three letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with the applicant’s professional work.
  • A statement in essay format indicating both personal and professional goals.

Hours Needed for Completion

  • M.Ed. program requires 33-semester hours of graduate coursework.

Student Teaching Requirement

  • None

Graduation Requirements

  • Successful completion of 33 semester credit hours specified by the M.Ed. curriculum.
  • A minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0.
  • Completion of all coursework within six years of the date of initial enrollment.
  • Payment of all tuition and fees.

Course Schedule

  • Courses meet four hours per night, two nights per week, for five weeks.

Completion Rate

  • Program can be completed in approximately 15 months.
