Clinical Laboratory Studies
Start your Clinical Lab Science Major at Springfield College in Illinois, finish it up at Benedictine University in Lisle, and pay the same SCI Tuition Rate for the entire Bachelor’s Degree program.
How does the program work?
You spend your first two years taking classes at Springfield College in Illinois where you will acquire a broad knowledge base in the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. This experience is invaluable to your future career development and daily interactions as citizens of your community.
You will spend your third year at Benedictine University in Lisle. Courses are offered in the Birck Hall of Science which houses state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory facilities. The full-time faculty, who all hold terminal degrees in their field, teach their own courses and laboratories and hold study sessions with their students. The same faculty are your academic advisors, counsel you in career choices and mentor your growth during the years you are in the department. You are required to maintain a grade point average of 2.7 or better. In your senior year, you will complete a 12-month clinical program at a hospital affiliated with the University — Hines Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital in Hines, Illinois — where you will fulfill your clinical requirements.
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has three times awarded science education and research grants to the department. Benedictine University has an excellent placement record for graduates applying to medical and dental schools.
Note: ONLY U.S. citizens or permanent residents may enter the Hines VA program. When you have completed your clinical year (all grades must be “C” or better) you will receive a bachelor of science degree from Benedictine University. Upon completion of this program, you will be eligible to take the certifying examination administered by the Board of Registry of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the National Certification Agency for medical laboratory personnel.
Why study clinical laboratory science at Benedictine?
Clinical laboratory science is one of the most rapidly expanding branches of medical science, with the demand for qualified clinical laboratory scientists far exceeding the number of trained people available. Because medical services are continuing to expand rapidly throughout the country, well trained people in this field will be assured of positions for many years to come. Benedictine University is one of the few schools in Illinois that offers a Bachelor of Science degree in clinical laboratory science. The degree will prepare you to: perform and supervise tests and procedures in the clinical laboratory; recognize interpretations of laboratory tests and have knowledge of conditions affecting tests results; develop data that may be used by the physicians in determining the presence, extent and, as far as possible, the cause of disease; and become a certified clinical laboratory scientist by passing the national certifying examinations.
