How does the program work?
You spend your first two years taking classes at Springfield College in Illinois where you will acquire a broad knowledge base in the arts, humanities, social sciences and natural sciences. This experience is invaluable to your future career development and daily interactions as citizens of your community.
Spend your last two years taking classes at Benedictine University in Lisle where you will take most of your major courses. Courses are offered in the Birck Hall of Science which houses state-of-the-art classroom and laboratory facilities. The full-time faculty, who all hold terminal degrees in their field, teach their own courses and laboratories and hold study sessions with their students. The same faculty are your academic advisors, counsel you in career choices and mentor your growth during the years you are in the department.
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute has three times awarded science education and research grants to the department. Benedictine University has an excellent placement record for graduates applying to medical and dental schools.
Why study health science at Benedictine?
If you are interested in a health-related career and want a challenging yet flexible academic preparation, you may choose to major in health science at Benedictine University. Our program offers you the opportunity to design your curriculum with more freedom and flexibility than is the case with most majors. It prepares you for further study for careers in physical or occupational therapy, dentistry, medicine, nursing, podiatry, veterinary medicine and other health-related professions. Before you apply for a professional school, you will benefit from 75 contact hours of practical experience in a health-related career of your choice. Benedictine University has a close working relationship with many outstanding medical facilities in the Chicago area, as well as with many individual professionals who supervise our students.
Our health science major, while it does not grant certification in any health science field, provides clinical experience in at least one health science specialty for course credit. Advisors in both basic science and clinical fields will advise you on academic preparation and procedures for applying to professional schools. Benedictine University has a director of pre-professional health programs for more help and advice and a health science recommendations committee which is concerned with helping students whose eventual goal is a career in a health-related profession. This committee is composed of faculty members who are interested in you as a professional student and have special knowledge of the academic subject matter and other qualifications needed to be successful in a health-related career.
