Commencement 2008

The 78th Annual Commencement Convocation will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church, 2941 S. Koke Mill Road, Springfield, Illinois. (Three blocks west of White Oaks Mall at the corner of Wabash and Koke Mill).

Hooding Ceremony (for bachelor’s degree and master’s degree candidates) and Awards Program will be held on Friday, May 16, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary of Christ the King Church, 1930 Barberry Drive, Springfield, Illinois.

SCI-BU Announces Mercedes Miller, Keynote Commencement Speaker

ATTENTION ALL GRADUATES

Commencement is just around the corner! Congratulations to you as you complete the final requirements that will make you a member of the 2008 graduating class of Springfield College – Benedictine University. Here is a brief list of dates you will want to remember.

Please read the following information and mark your calendar:

MARCH 5 – Grad Prep Day, 6th Street Annex (between Dawson Hall and Beata Hall). From 10:00 am – 6:00 pm, students will be able to order cap and gowns, order personalized announcements or class rings, register to win a free class ring and obtain career services assistance.

APRIL 14 – MAY 09: PICK UP YOUR GRADUATION ANNOUNCEMENTS
Students may pick up their 10 generic announcements in the Bookstore.
Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm; Friday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm; Saturdays - April 19, April 26: 7:30am – 12pm.

MAY 5 – MAY 15: CAP and GOWN DISTRIBUTION FOR ALL GRADUATES
Students may pick up their cap and gown in the Bookstore.
Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm; Friday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm; Saturday - May 10: 7:30am – 12pm.

MAY 16, 2008: HOODING and AWARDS CEREMONY in the sanctuary of CHRIST THE KING CHURCH. All students are welcome. However, students receiving an award or graduating with a bachelor’s or master’s degree will receive an invitation to the evening ceremony. Bachelor and master degree candidates need to wear their commencement gowns (caps are not necessary) and bring their hoods.

MAY 17, 2008: CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR GRADUATION
First United Methodist Church, 2941 S. Koke Mill Road, Springfield, Illinois. (Three blocks west of White Oaks Mall at the corner of Wabash and Koke Mill).

9:15 a.m. Students and Faculty line-up.
9:50 a.m. Procession begins to the sanctuary.
10:00 a.m. Commencement Services in the church’s sanctuary.

The cap, gown, hood and tassel are yours to keep. The ceremony which begins at 10:00 am is expected to last about one and one half hours.

Attention graduates: DO NOT USE CELL PHONES DURING THE CEREMONY

Guests and Seating: The Commencement Convocation will be held in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church, 2941 S. Koke Mill Road, Springfield, Illinois. (Three blocks west of White Oaks Mall at the corner of Wabash and Koke Mill). There is open seating on the main floor and the balcony. No tickets are required for admission.

Graduation Announcements: You may pick up your ten (10) complimentary announcements April 14 – May 09 in the Bookstore during the following hours:
Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm; Friday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm; Saturdays - April 19, April 26: 7:30am – 12pm .
If you would like to order personalized announcements, please attend the Grad Prep Day on Wednesday, March 5, from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm in the 6th Street Annex (between Dawson Hall and Beata Hall).

Cap, Gown and Hood Pick-up: All degree candidates must pick up academic attire Monday, May 05 – Thursday, May 15 in the Bookstore during the following hours:
Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm; Friday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm; Saturday - May 10: 7:30am – 12pm.

Associate and Undergraduate
A.A. gowns are black,
B.B.A. degree hoods have an acorn trim,
B.A. degree hoods have a white trim.

Graduate
Acorn velvet trim represents Business Administration and Management and Organizational Behavior disciplines;
Blue velvet trim represents the Education discipline; and
White velvet trim represents the Master of Arts.

Faculty Commencement Regalia
Faculty will be notified by e-mail when commencement regalia arrives and pick-up directions.

Line-up and Processional: Please report to the main lobby of the First United Methodist Church by 9:15 am for your line-up position. Students need to wear their caps, gowns and hoods. Line up is in alphabetical order within your degree. Look for signs and volunteers pointing you in the right direction. Please leave belongings in your car or give them to a family member, as no place is available to leave them during the convocation.

Photography: A professional photographer from Szoke Photography will take a picture of every graduate as he or she receives a diploma cover. Graduates will be able to view their photos at szokephoto.com beginning Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 2 pm. The website password to access their photos is SCIBU. If you do not have access to a computer, you may call Szoke Photography at (217) 629-9230. Individual and package prices will be available.

Proper Attire Policy: Business or dress clothes/shoes are appropriate. Light cotton or rayon fabrics are cool in warm weather. Jeans, shorts, gym shoes and beach sandals are not acceptable. Writing on caps is not acceptable.

Substance Abuse Policy: Consumption of alcohol or any other chemical substance is prohibited before and during the Commencement Convocation. Any individual possessing or consuming these substances will be removed from the program.
