Summer Camps 2008
Descriptions

Actor Camp
Campers will be exposed to basic acting techniques and the various aspects of theater, e.g. what goes on backstage and how costumes, makeup, sets, and props all work together to create a winning performance.

Art Around the World
Do you want to learn about art from all over the world? Then, Art Around the World
Camp is for you! Campers will learn about famous art from all around the world and creating their own replicas of some of these masterpieces.

Aviation Camp
If you want to take a week to learn more about airplanes, then this camp is for you! Campers will learn about different types of aircraft, including military aircraft. At the end of the week, we will take a tour of the Springfield airport.

CSI
Campers will learn about how to conduct an investigation. Campers will have the opportunity to look at crime scene evidence, examine it, and solve the crime. Campers will participate in various investigations throughout the week. Tentatively, the crime lab will pay us a visit on the last day of camp.

Computer Camp
In Computer Camp, the campers will create their own web sites as the main focus of the camp. Other activities will include researching the Google Earth website, learning to play multiple games from different web sites and Image Manipulation (the use of Photoshop).

Discover Spanish
Discover Spanish camp is for campers who want to learn basics of the Spanish language and Mexican customs/traditions and learn about. During the week, campers will have fun craft projects and plan a Fiesta for the last day of Camp.

Exploring Space
In Exploring Space Camp, campers will participate in fun interactive activities allowing them to learn more about the solar system. Campers will also learn about telescopes and how to use them properly. If time allows, campers will take a field trip to the UIS observatory.

Fear Factor
Fear Factor Camp will challenge campers to try things that they normally would not. They will have the choice to try some of our “fear factor” stunts, such as various food stunts and physical stunts. Ultimately, each activity is focused to help build self esteem, personal growth and challenge each youth to be more confident in him/her and the things that each can accomplish. Campers will take a look at the many different types of phobias in the world.

Foreign Country Camp
In Foreign Country Camp, students will learn about various countries. Campers will learn about the traditions of China, England, France, Italy and Spain during this activity packed camp! Campers will plan an Ethnic Festival for the end of the week, and bring a dish from a country that was studied during the week.

Ghost Camp
Are you interested in learning more about Ghosts and paranormal activity? This camp is for you! A member of the Springfield Ghost Society will come and spend part of a morning with the campers.

Harry Potter Camp
Campers would you like an opportunity to discuss Harry Potter with your friends? During camp, students will play a fun Harry Potter trivia game and have the opportunity to watch Harry Potter movies on the big screen in the President’s Room.

History of Origami
Campers, you will learn the ancient art of Origami (folding paper to create designs and creatures). You will learn the basic steps to create your own personal Origami art. Campers will be allowed to explore more difficult Origami designs at their own leisure.

Island Camp
If you Were Stranded........ will be the theme of this year’s Island Camp. Campers will learn “how to survive” making use of their surroundings, build and test a replica boat and play “If you were stranded game”, where the kids will pick items that they would want to have with them if they were stranded on a desert island. In addition to those activities, the kids will be viewing episodes from the series of Gilligan’s Island.

Jungle
Swing into the wonderful world of jungles! If you have ever wanted to swing from the trees, dance with a tiger, or swim in the Amazon River this camp is for you! In SC-BU’s Jungle Camp June 25-29, you will become a part of the Springfield Jungle because our classroom will transform into a jungle that we will explore all week! Come to learn about anacondas, cougars, tree-frogs, exotic plants and much more! Make your own rain stick and perform a play based on the popular book The Great Kapok Tree by Lynn Cherry. Join us for an exciting exploration of the jungle!

Math
Come and learn how Mathematics can be fun! We will explore the fun aspects of mathematics in a fun and informative mode including computer use. Come and expand your horizons and have fun while learning.

Photography
Your child will learn the basics of different types of digital photography including Cityscape Photography, Nature and Travel, Sports and Action, Product and Advertising, and Portrait Photography. This fun-filled camp incorporates technology, arts, crafts and games. Photo opportunities will occur on nature walks through Lincoln Park and on a trip to historical downtown Springfield. Students will meet and guest speakers/photographers and much, much more. Please send your child with their own digital camera.

Pirate Camp
Ahoy matey! If you want a fun filled week of learning about pirates, our Pirate Camp is for you! Campers will participate in a variety of pirate activities that include building model ships and going on treasure hunts!

Reading Camp
Campers will read and share their favorite stories as well as explore different types of literature.

Sea Camp
If you want to learn about the creatures that live in the sea, then this camp is for you. Campers will participate in fun games, experiments and art projects. Throughout our sea faring experience, we will sample some delicious snacks inspired by the sea

Sports History
History of Baseball, Basketball, and Football will be focused on, with an emphasis on the greats of each sport. Activities will include Sports Trivia games, Scene It! Sports edition, and participation in baseball, basketball and football games. Camp will wrap up with a field trip to the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame.

Super Hero Camp
This year, Super Hero Camp will look at some of the most famous Super Heroes of all-time. Batman, Superman, and Spiderman will be discussed, including watching selected movies based on these Super Heroes. Campers will also have the opportunity to create their own Super Hero.

Tiptoeing Through Teepees
Take a walk with Native Americans in this fun filled camp! We will be learning about Native Americans, their way of life, and their traditions by completing various actives and craft projects. We will also be having our own Powwow! If time allows we will take a field trip that will look at the Native American way of life.

Viking Camp
Have you ever hear of Eric the Red or wondered how the Vikings lived? If so, Viking Camp is for you! In this camp you will experience the life of a Viking. Campers will enjoy playing Viking games and taking part in a Viking feast at the end of camp!

Writing Poetry
This year’s Poetry Camp will focus on writing a different type of poem each day. The type of poem will be completely up to the child, as a list of poems and examples of such poems will be available. The topics of the poems will be open for the kids to decide. Possible types of poetry to be completed will be: ABC poems, Bio poems, Name poetry, Rhyme, and Shape poetry. In addition, Classic and modern poetry will be examined.
