On April 24, 2008, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., a gala will be held to celebrate the inaugural print issue and public-radio broadcast of Quiddity International Literary Journal and Public-Radio Program, the result of an enthusiastic partnership between Springfield College-Benedictine University and Illinois Public Radio’s hub station, WUIS 91.9/WIPA 89.3, NPR Member and PRI Affiliate.
The festivities will be held on the lawn of the Brinkerhoff Home on the Springfield College-Benedictine University campus at 1500 North Fifth Street in Springfield and will feature an intertextual visual-arts project and performance poetry, including a performance by Tyehimba Jess, whose book, Leadbelly, won the prestigious National Poetry Series. Jess’s work has been called “astonishing” by the Library Journal and Ploughshares. His numerous other awards include fellowships from the NEA, Provincetown FAC, the IAC, as well as the Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Award.
The intertextual project “Vietnam Visits Uncle Bill” is the result of a collaborative artistic effort among Quiddity interns; writer Asha Vose and sound engineer Daniel Vose of Knoxville, Tennessee; student, faculty, and staff artists from Springfield College-Benedictine University as well as artists from the Springfield area community. Intern Eric Craddock, who has been leading the project’s charge, describes it as “interpretive layers of sonic, visual, and textual imagery combined to evoke multiple dimensions inherent in literary art…a tiny glimpse of how we might ‘read’ stories in the coming years.”
Wine, light hors d’oeuvres, and desserts will be served, so please RSVP with the number in your party as soon as possible to (217) 525-1420, ext. 292.

As you all may be aware, a student Katelyn McCarty was killed in a car accident Friday night near Middleton, Illinois. Katie was from Taylorville and studying nursing at the College. A memorial service for Katelyn is scheduled at noon in the Dawson Hall Chapel on Tuesday, February 19, 2008.
Friday’s tragic accident took the lives of four young people and left two survivors. The two survivors of the accident, Clark Schoonover and Zachary Rickord, are both SCI-BU students and are currently at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois.
The Student Assistance Program is available to help all the students. Please contact Dean Kevin Broeckling for information.
Please remember that this is a private time of grieving for Katelyn’s family and friends. Our hearts and prayers are with them at this time.
